Complications from Eyelash Extensions

There are 3 main factors to consider when evaluating eyelash extensions from an eye-health perspective:  Lash material, adhesive and the removal process.  The most commons false eyelash materials are mink, silk, and synthetic materials. Either a full-line, cluster or individual lashes extensions are applied using various adhesive agents.  A study investigating the impact of false eyelashes on ocular surfaces disease reported that most bonding agents are formaldehyde-based and contain latex components-both of which commonly elicit allergic reactions.  Removing professional lash extensions generally requires a professional-grade solvent, coconut oil or an oil-based remover.  Removing lashes improperly or forcefully can lead to damage and possible permanent loss of your natural lashes.

It is recommended to seek out a licensed esthetician working in a hygienic environment and steer clear of cheaply made products or self-applications.  Ask the technician what materials, adhesives and solvents will be used and to be safe, test the glue on the inside of your wrist before allowing it to be applied to your lids.  Adhesives and solvents are not subject to FDA approval so you really have to evaluate these products yourself.

Because these lash enhancements are not normal anatomical structures, they can cause poor hygiene and infection.  The lashes can act like a 'wick" funneling foreign particles toward the eyes.  Thus, it is important to routinely clean around the extensions to mitigate the infection risks.  Ocusoft lid wipes are excellent for this purpose.  Eyelash extensions and the chemicals involved with applying and removing them can increase dry eye symptoms.  See an eye doctor if you have increased symptoms since the lash application.
